St. Mary Cathedral Pew Structural Repair

St. Mary Cathedral Pew Structural Repair

Overview

The pews at St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing, Michigan were installed during the church’s 1968 renovation. Over the decades, the structural joints and supports across all 1,400 seating positions had experienced varying degrees of wear and loosening — some requiring minor reinforcement, others more substantial repair.

Each pew was individually assessed and reinforced as needed, restoring structural integrity throughout the entire seating area of the cathedral.

Scope of Work

  • 1,400 individual seating positions inspected and assessed
  • Each pew reinforced based on its specific condition — no two were identical
  • Work performed in-place within the cathedral

The Pews

The pews are original to the 1968 renovation of St. Mary Cathedral — a historic Roman Catholic cathedral serving the Diocese of Lansing. The woodwork reflects the craftsmanship typical of mid-century ecclesiastical furniture, and the goal of the repair was to preserve and stabilize the originals rather than replace them.
